Performance
MEMBRANE_S is an installation performance for an audience in a space accompanied by environmental and human generated sounds and Mary Overlie’s Six Viewpoints of Space, Shape, Time, Emotion and Movement dance improvisation performance techniques. Presented at sunset, natural and contrived light is projected into a shape on the floor, which acts as a representation of a membrane, among many other membranes either naturally in the space or as added objects, such as translucent polyurethane film. Specific components are incorporated for altering audience perspectives during viewing.
The following materials are involved in the piece made for 4ZERO7 Gallery in Billings, MT: 2 trumpets, cellophane, flexible hose conduit, 6 opaque walls, 9 diffusion/transmission windows, cracked concrete, galvanized steel conduits/ducts and costume.
Cells provide structure and function for all living things, from microorganisms to humans. It can be viewed as an enclosed vessel, within which innumerable chemical reactions take place simultaneously. The structure and function of cells are critically dependent on membranes. The selective permeability of biological membranes allows the cell to control and maintain its internal composition. The cell membrane gives the cell its structure and regulates the materials that enter and leave the cell.
